Installer Championship

The HNA Installer Championship is intended to test and recognize the skill, dedication, and passion of hardscape contractors from North America.

 

How to Compete

Each team that competes in the championship will have their understanding of industry best practices and guidelines (safety, quality, and craftsmanship) tested in a race against the clock and other top installers in the industry. This championship will determine the best of the best in the hardscape industry!

Rules

This championship is restricted to hardscape contractors. Each team member must be employed in the hardscape industry in North America as a professional installer of segmental retaining walls, clay, and concrete pavers. This championship is not for amateurs or do-it-yourselfers. Each team member must sign, date, and agree to the terms and conditions of the required HNA Installer Championship Team registration form.

  • Preliminary competition will take place on October 19, 2023 and the Finals will occur on October 20, 2023 in the Hardscape House

  • Top 4 teams will be recognized on October 20, 2023 at 12:45 pm in the Hardscape House

  • 1. Registration is not considered complete until the fully completed and signed Team Registration Form is received along with supporting documents.

    2. All cancellations must be submitted to the Event Organizer, in writing at least 1 week in advance of the event. Substitutions will be permitted from the same company any time prior to the event.

    3. The sponsors, HNA and CMHA are not responsible for expenses incurred due to cancellation of the championship.

    4. All participants who are found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the Installer Championship will be immediately dismissed from the competition.

    5. The decision of the judges is final.

    6. Failure to comply with the rules or conditions of the Championship by any team member will result in the team’s disqualification.

  • 1. Registration is limited to the first 16 sponsored teams.

    Step 1. Obtain proof of their general liability and workers compensation insurance coverage.

    Step 2. Complete the Team Registration Form and have each team member sign it.

    Step 3. Submit the insurance documents and Team Registration Form by scan and email to bhorr@masonryandhardscapes.org

    2. Each team must have two (2) crew members and may choose to register one (1) crew alternate, each of whom must sign and date this Team Registration Form.

    3. Each construction area will be under a covered pavilion and the HNA Installer Championship will proceed regardless of typical weather conditions. In extreme weather events the Event Organizer may elect to delay or postpone the event.

    4. Teams must attend the pre-event meeting scheduled on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at 5:15 pm at the Kentucky Exposition Center 937 Phillips Lane, Louisville, KY. At the pre-event meeting the judging criteria and rules will be reviewed, and teams will be randomly placed in a preliminary round and assigned a construction area. Failure to attend or make alternate arrangements will constitute a withdrawal from the HNA Installer Championship.

    5. Each team will be provided with the basic hand tools and personal safety equipment. The following larger tools will be supplied for use during the Championship: Weber CF3 vibratory plate compactor, iQMS362 16.5" Dust Control Masonry Saw, ALMI AL43U Easy block splitter, screed rails, screed board, d-handled square shovel, wheelbarrow and other various tools. Teams can bring and use their own small non-powered hand tools.

    6. All materials to be used in the construction will be provided and placed in the team’s assigned area. Pre-cut or discarded materials left from previous rounds cannot be used in the construction. Teams cannot supply their own materials.

    7. There will be up to three (3) preliminary rounds with up to four (6) teams competing per round.

    8. Teams are required to be at their designated construction area no less than 15 minutes prior to the start of the round they are competing in. Failure to arrive at this time will constitute a withdrawal from the HNA Installer Championship.

    9. During each preliminary round, all teams will construct an 8’x10’ patio area within 60 minutes as detailed in the supplied drawing which will require the installation of a seat wall, herringbone field, soldier course, bedding sand, edge restraint, and complete the initial paver compaction. Do not fill joints with sand or perform the final compaction.

    10. Between each preliminary round, each construction area will be returned as close as possible to its original state so the subsequent team may compete without any noticeable advantage or disadvantage.

    11. During the preliminary round(s) each team’s score will be calculated based on completeness, compliance to industry guidelines, safety, quality and craftsmanship by each judge as detailed in the Preliminary Round Judging Form.

    12. The team’s Preliminary Round Total Score will be the sum of their score from all judges during the preliminary round.

    13. At the end of the all preliminary round(s) each team will be ranked based on their Preliminary Round Total Score. The four teams with the highest Preliminary Round Total Scores out of all preliminary round(s) will advance to the Championship round.

    14. During the Championship round, each team will be given ninety (90) minutes to complete their construction, according to their own creative design in the assigned construction area using the materials provided.

    15. During the Championship round each team’s score will be calculated based on completeness, compliance to industry guidelines, safety, quality, craftsmanship and creativity as detailed in the Championship Round Judging Form by each judge.

    16. The team’s Championship Round Total Score will be the sum of their scores from all judges during the Championship round.

    17. At the end of the Championship round, each team will be ranked based on their Championship Round Total Score. In the case of a tie, the judges will determine the final ranking.

    18. The team ranked highest will be declared the “Installer Champion”.
